Cold calling for diapers (on brands like Target) was one of my hobbies as a teenager. I loved the process. Inviting celebrities to my mid level professional tennis matches was another pastime of mine. The more famous and inaccessible the person, the more excited I'd get about reaching out.
As an adult, this habit of connecting friends with media moments, features, and opportunities grew from a hobby into a business.
Working with emerging brands and seeing them shine on shows, print, and social media is fulfilling. When asked what I do for a living my response is: connect people. Introducing a brand, product, or service that I believe in to someone I respect is my ultimate.
While being a NCAA Division I head coach, I unexpectedly became a Beauty Consultant for a skincare and cosmetics company. In this world of pink Cadillacs I learned the power of enthusiasm and likability. Hands down, direct sales was the most fascinating experience of my life.
Some of the methods I use today come from those early days of soft selling.
High point: selling over $3,000 in cosmetics in 45 minutes (that's a lot of mascara!) Low point: the bloodiest home party in the history of modern civilization (see photo.)
Sales are in my blood. My father, a former NBA Basketball Player, always told me "ask them what they are looking for." To which my mother, a music school teacher, chimes in "and ABC...Always Be Closing."
